Women's basketball gets big win at Carleton

Sophomore Krystal Tschumperlin scored 19 points and sophomore Jess Heinen added 17 as the Pipers stopped a 20-game losing streak to Carleton with a 69-61 win Monday night in Northfield, Minn.

Heinen netted 14 of her 17 points in the first half, helping the Pipers (12-9, 10-8 in the MIAC) to a 34-23 halftime lead. With the score tied at 14-14, Hamline went on a 12-2 run to grab the lead. Heinen started the run with one of her four three-pointers in the first half. Tschumperlin had back-to-back threes during the run.

Hamline went 12-of-27 from three-point range in the game. Heinen hit 4-of-5 from beyond the arc while Tschumperlin was 3-of-6 from three.

The Pipers led for the entire second half. The Knights (15-6, 12-6) cut the lead to 54-53 on a pair of Anna Biewen free throws with five minutes to play, but the Pipers hit consecutive threes by Grace Weinreich and Tschumperlin to up the lead to seven.

The win leaves the Pipers in a tie for the final playoff spot with St. Catherine at 10-8 in the conference.

Tschumperlin and Heinen were joined in double figures by Weinreich, who added 11 points. Junior Shelby Hyllengren, the conference's leading rebounder, had nine boards in the game.

Carleton was paced by Hannah Oken-Berg's 19 points and 10 rebounds. Biewen tallied 11 points, and Megan Mileusnic chipped on 10 points.

Hamline shot just 11-of-33 from inside the three-point line (33 percent), but connected on 12-of-27 from three (44 percent). The Knights were 3-of-18 from three (17 percent) and 24-of-57 overall from the floor (42 percent).

The Pipers will play at St. Catherine in an important MIAC contest on Wednesday. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
