Jessica Heinen (Sr., Spicer, Minn.) began the season with a double-double, and Mary Wilkowski (So., Savannah, Ga.) led the team in scoring, as the Hamline University women's basketball team opened the 2008-09 campaign with a 71-64 win at Northwestern College.

Heinen reined in 13 rebounds and tallied 10 points, while Wilkowski put 18 points on the scoreboard. Olivia Omoyayi (So., Plymouth, Minn.) had 13 points to be the third Piper in double-digit scoring on the night.

Hamline's offense went to work immediately after the tip-off, jumping to a quick  6-0 lead that climbed to a 10-1 advantage. The Pipers stayed in control for most of the first half, allowing the Eagles a brief one-point lead with two and a half minutes on the clock. They quickly recovered, however, when Omoyayi sank a pair of free throws to regain the lead, which built to a five-point advantage heading into the locker room.

The second half saw several lead changes between the two teams on the scoreboard, until the final lead change in favor of the Pipers came with less than three minutes to play as Wilkowski made three free throws in two trips to the line.

Heinen was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line, while Omoyayi went 5-for-6 when fouled and Wilkowski was 6-for-8.

The Pipers will open MIAC play at home against St. Olaf College on Tuesday, November 18 at 5:45 p.m. at Hutton Arena.
