Piper women fall to Knights on the road

Mary Wilkowski Jessica Heinen
Despite a late-game push, the Hamline University Pipers' women's basketball team couldn't overcome a and eight-point deficit and fell, 67-64, at Carleton College.

Carleton held the lead for much of the first half, until Shelby Hyllengren (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) made a jumper to give the visitors their first lead of the game at 3:39. Hamline stayed ahead until two free throws by the Knights with 14 seconds to play until halftime gave them a 31-30 lead heading into the locker room.

Hamline's Jessica Heinen (Jr., Spicer, Minn.) stepped up to the free throw line herself to drain two shots to get a one-point lead back at 18:49 in the second half. The score stayed at 32-31 for another minute, until a Carleton layup put the score in favor of the hosts once again.

The Knights built up an eight point lead, and Heinen and Rochelle Sather (So., Andover, Minn.) combined to make three more free throws to bring the score to 67-62, but it wasn't enough, despite Nikki Klinck's (Fy., Hibbing, Minn.) jumper at the buzzer, to take over the game.

Mary Wilkowski (Fy., Savannah, Ga.) led the Pipers with 19 points, while Heinen added 13. Heinen went 6-for-6 from the free throw line, while Wilkowski was 7-for-14 from the floor.

The Pipers fall to 12-10, 9-10 MIAC, while the Knights improved to 14-8, 13-6 MIAC. Hamline remains in 6th place in the MIAC standings, as they travel to St. Benedict on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. start.
