Duo of Ewert, Korchik dominate against Cardinals

Seniors Laurisa Ewert and Carolyn Korchik lead Pipers with 21 and 20 points, respectively, as Hamline defeats St. Mary’s 81-58 Wednesday night in Hutton Arena.

Hamline (12-10, 8-9 in MIAC) held the Cardinals to just 29 percent shooting in the first half, while shooting 58 percent themselves.  Both teams were neck and neck for the first ten minutes of play until Ewert scored to break a 16-16 deadlock with 8:28 left on the clock.  The Pipers took an 18-16 lead, which they would hold for the remainder of the game.

Ewert scored 21 points on 10 of 13 from the floor to lead all Pipers.  Korchik tallied 20 points of her own, including six from beyond the arc.  First-year Jessica Heinen chipped in 15 from the bench, while sophomore Shelby Hyllengren led the Pipers defensively with seven rebounds.

The Cardinals were paced by senior guard Ashley Luehmann with 13 points, including three three-point shots.

Hamline outrebounded the Cardinals 30-21.  Offensively, the Pipers racked up 22 assists, including six from both Ewert and junior Kelly Lines.

The Pipers will host St. Ben’s on Saturday in Hutton Arena.  Game time is slated for 1:00 pm.
