Women's basketball can't handle Monahan, Gusties
Monahan finished the contest shooting 11 of 24 from the field with a pair of three-pointers. She came into the game as the league's second-leading scorer with 19.2 points per game. Sophomore Jess Vadnais added 15 points for the Gusties (11-3, 9-2 in the MIAC). Hamline (7-8, 4-7) was led by senior Carolyn Korchik, who totaled 18 points on 7 of 14 shooting, 4 of 6 from three-point range. Senior Laurisa Ewert netted 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds while sophomore Ashley Vorwerk scored 10 points. The Pipers were much better from the field in the contest, shooting 48 percent from the floor (24-50) compared to 34 percent for the Gusties (25-73). However, the Gusties outrebounded Hamline 47-29 and forced 23 Piper turnovers. It resulted in 23 more field goal attempts and 13 more free throw attempts for Gustavus. The Pipers started strong, taking a quick 7-0 lead to start the game. Ewert scored a pair of buckets on Hamline's first two possessions. Hamline continued to lead 19-12 until the Gusties responded with an 18-2 run. Monahan had 10 points, including both of her three-point baskets during the spurt. Vadnais added five points. The Pipers will next host Carleton Wednesday night at Hutton Arena. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m. |
