St. Benedict pulls away in second half to defeat Pipers

St. Benedict hit 20 of 25 free throws in the second half and came away with an 80-67 win over the Hamline women's basketball team Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph, Minn.

After a close first half that saw the Pipers (6-6, 3-5 in the MIAC) led most of the way, the Blazers (10-2, 7-1) were able to put Hamline away in the second half, shooting 46 percent from the field (12-26) as well as making eight more free throws (20) than the Pipers attempted (12).

Senior forward Laurisa Ewert, who played just 22 minutes due to foul trouble, led the Pipers with 17 points on 8 of 10 shooting. Senior Carolyn Korchik added 12 points.  Hamline shot 51 percent for the game (25-49).

However, the Pipers could not overcome 21 turnovers and the Blazers solid free throw shooting. Blazer guard Darby Noreen led St. Benedict with 25 points. Anna Heikenen netted 13 points with Katie Kempe and Ellie Boone each tallied 11.

The Pipers will next play at Bethel on Monday. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m.
