Carroll tips women's basketball

Pioneer Crystal Hoewisch's layup with 27 seconds remaining in the contest lifted Carroll College to a 71-70 victory over Hamline Thursday at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Carroll (8-1) trailed for the entire second half until Hoewisch?s basket. The Pipers (4-4) had three different shots to win the game in the final 15 seconds, but Laurisa Ewert's last effort missed as time expired.

Hamline led 68-58 after a Carolyn Korchik layup with 3:58 left in the game, but the Pioneers ended the game on a 13-2 run. Hoewisch netted eight of her 22 points during the decisive stretch. Krista Rode scored a game-high 25 points for the Pioneers.

Ewert led the Pipers with 17 points on 7 of 19 shooting. Korchik added 16 points. Junior Kelly Lines chipped in 11 points.

Hamline led 34-27 at the break after holding the Pioneers to 28 percent shooting (9-32). Hamline increased the lead to as many as 14 points midway through the second half.

The Pipers were 48 percent in the first half (11-23), but cooled to 36 percent (13-36) in the second.

The Pipers will host St. Olaf Monday night at Hutton Arena. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m.
