Heinen propels women's basketball to win

First-year Jessica Heinen came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points as Hamline defeated Augsburg 68-58 Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis, Minn.

Heinen went 5 of 6 from the floor including 2 of 2 from beyond the arc. With the Pipers (5-5, 2-4 in the MIAC) down 47-44 with under 10 minutes to play, Heinen scored five points during a pivotal 10-0.  Heinen gave the Pipers a 48-47 lead with a pair of free throws. On the Pipers' next possession, she drained a three-pointer for a four-point lead.

Sophomore Allison Bratsch continued the spurt with a three-pointer as Hamline pulled away. Bratsch netted 11 points and five assists for Hamline. Junior Kelly Lines scored 10 points.

The Auggies (3-8, 1-6) held the Pipers to just 26 percent shooting the first half while taking a 24-23 lead. The lead could have been larger, but the Pipers forced Augsburg into 17 first half turnovers - 31 for the game. Senior Laurisa Ewert had seven steals in the contest.

The Pipers improved to 43 percent shooting the second half (15-35) and 34 percent for the game.

Katie LaGrave and Michelle Richter each totaled 14 points for the Auggies. Kristina Lurken scored 10 points.

The Pipers will travel to St. Mary's on Wednesday. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m.
