Carleton defeats Piper volleyball in four games

The Hamline University volleyball team lost their second MIAC match of the season, falling 3-1 (14-30, 20-30, 30-28, 16-30) to Carleton College on the road on Wednesday night.

The Knights controlled play early in the match, taking the lead from the start and never relinquishing it in game one. The story played out nearly the same in the second game. The Pipers jumping out to a 2-1 lead off of two Carleton errors before Carleton regrouped and reeled off seven kills around a Piper error to take control of the game.

Hamline fought back in the third game, taking the lead at the first point. It took five game points, but the Pipers ended game three with a 30-28 victory.

However, Carleton came back strong from the game three loss, dominating in the final game, to walk away with the 30-16 win in the game and the 3-1 match win.

Hamline was led by sophomore Tasha Simmons' (Eagan, Minn.)  and senior Shelby Hyllengren's (Cannon Falls, Minn.) 15 kills each. Defensively, Simmons had 18 digs and first-year Heidi Larsen (Andover, Minn.) contributed 19 digs.

Hamline falls to 10-5 (1-2 MIAC). The Pipers return to conference play on Friday, September 28 when they travel to Augsburg for a 7:00 match.
