Volleyball sweeps at St. Kate's Invitational Tournament

Lynette Jones' Piper volleyball team has jumped to an 8-1 start on the season after taking all four matches in the St. Catherine Invitational this weekend without dropping a game.

Jenny NicholsHamline eliminated both Bethany Lutheran College and the host school 3-0 today. Yesterday, the Piperes defeated St. Olaf and Grinnell by the same scores. All four matches were non-conference competitions.

In the first game today, Jones coached against her daughter, Nicole Jones, who is the libero for Bethany Lutheran. Although Nicole Jones led Bethany Lutheran defensively with 14 digs , Lynette Jones' offensive production from the Pipers was too much for the Vikings. Tasha Simmons and Shelby Hyllengren both contributed 14 kills in the win. The Pipers finished the match with game scores of 29-27, 30-25, and 30-22.

Against the College of St. Catherine, the Pipers saw diverse Emily Amicidefensive contributors, with four players having 10 or more digs and several others stepping up with three or more. Simmons led the team with 20 digs in the game, as well as having 18 kills. The final game scores against the Cats were 30-17, 30-24, and 30-16.

Hamline led the tournament by placing two players on the all-tournament team - Emily Amici and Jenny Nichols.

The Pipers will play their first conference match on Wednesday when they travel to St. Mary's at 7:00 p.m.
