Volleyball wins third straight MIAC match

The Pipers improved to 3-1 in MIAC play with a five-game 30-22, 31-33, 30-27, 22-30, 15-13 win over Macalester Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena.

The Pipers (9-4, 3-1 in the MIAC) won three consecutive MIAC matches for the first time since 1992 when Hamline won nine straight against conference opponents. It also marked the first time the Pipers had beaten Macalester since 1996 - a span of 11 matches.

Senior middle blocker Dana Luiken led the Pipers with 24 kills in 43 attempts. First-year Tasha Simmons had 13 kills while junior Shelby Hyllengren had 10 kills.

Luiken is now five kills shy of becoming the sixth player in Hamline history to amass 1,000 career kills.

The Pipers held a 91-79 advntage in digs in the contest. Senior senior Jenna Witt had 24 digs. Simmons added 22 on the day.

Sophomore setter Jenny Nichols dished out 49 assists in the victory.

The Scots (7-5, 2-2) were paced by Sonia Muzikarova with 27 kills. Lauren Eberhardt had 14, and Kate Fahje added 10. Kari Tanaka passed out 54 assists.

After splitting the first four games, the Pipers took control in game five, jumping out to a 10-6 lead. Luiken had four kills and two blocks in the decisive game.

The Pipers will host St. Benedict Wednesday night at Hutton Arena. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
