Volleyball splits matches at St. Catherine Invitational

The Hamline volleyball team went to 6-3 on the season after splitting a pair of matches at the St. Catherine Invitational Saturday in St. Paul, Minn.

Hamline defeated Finlandia 30-17, 30-13, 30-14 to complete the tournament. Junior Shelby Hyllengren led the Pipers with 12 kills in the match. Sophomore Amanda Booth added 10 kills.

The Pipers had 12 service aces as a team in the match with junior Tina Cherland serving four aces. She also added a team-high 23 digs. Sophomore Jenny Nichols had 18 assists.

The Pipers lost their first match of the day 30-28, 30-19, 30-23 to Buena Vista.

Hyllengren had 11 kills in the contest. Senior Dana Luiken and first-year Tasha Simmons each added seven.

Luiken was named to the All-Tournament team after posting 43 kills in four contests with a hitting percentage of .222. She also led the team with 11 blocks.

The Pipers will open MIAC play when they travel to Gustavus on Wednesday. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
