Volleyball sends off seniors in fine fashion

Playing in their last conference home game of the season, the Pipers sent their three seniors off with a 30-10, 30-21, 31-29 victory over St. Catherine Friday night at Hutton Arena.

The Pipers (14-7, 5-4 in the MIAC) honored seniors Dana Luiken, Christina Rossetter, and Jenna Witt before the game and came out smoking in game one with a 30-10 win.

Hamline went on a 7-0 run early on the serve of Sara Burns to take a 9-1 lead. She later served 12 straight points to finish of th match.

First-year Tasha Simmons had eight of her 14 kills in the game. Luiken added seven of her team-high 17 kills in game one.  The Pipers hit .731 as a team in the game with 20 kills and one error on 26 attempts. The Pipers hit .364 as a team for the match.

Game two started out much the same as the Pipers grabbed a 18-4 lead out of the gate and cruised to the win 30-21. Luiken had five kills during a 14-3 run to start the game.

Hamline held a 29-20 lead in game three before the Wildcats (8-15, 2-6) mounted a comeback to tie the game at 29-29, but a Wildcat attacking error and a Luiken kill ended the match.

Setter Jenny Nichols added 41 assists. Witt led the defense with 17 digs with Simmons adding 14.

Lana Brand and Maria Hoffman each tallied eight kills for St. Catherine. Whitney Sparby dished out 28 assists.
