Volleyball earns first-ever win over St. Benedict

Junior Shelby Hyllengren had 21 kills and senior Dana Luiken tallied her 1,000th career kill as the Pipers won for the first time over St. Benedict 30-26, 26-30, 30-25, 30-24 Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.

The Pipers (10-4, 4-1 in the MIAC) snapped a streak of 22 straight losses dating back to 1987 to St. Benedict (8-5, 3-2) with the victory. Hamline University records do not go back any further.

Hyllengren had 21 kills on 51 attempts in the contest, including six in Hamline's game one win. Luiken recorded 12 kills on the evening, becoming the sixth player in Hamline history to amass 1,000 career kills. Sophomore Amanda Booth added 14 kills while Tasha Simmons had 10.

After splitting the first two games, Hamline scored six of the last seven points to break a 24-24 tie and take game three. Hyllengren had three kills during the run with Simmons finishing the game with her fifth of the stanza.

The Pipers closed out game four after falling behind 11-4. They knotted the score at 22-22 before scoring on eight of the last 10 points. Hyllengren again had three kills in the spurt.

Hamline held a 65-49 edge in kills for the match and had a hitting percentage of .195 for the match compared to the Blazers .110.

Senior Jenna Witt had 25 digs for the Pipers. Simmons added 22 digs.

St. Benedict was led by Emily Stessman's 19 kills. Teri Knapper had nine kills.

Hamline will travel to St. Mary's on Friday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
