Volleyball loses regular season finale

The Pipers go into the conference playoffs as the fifth seed after falling to Augsburg 30-23, 21-30, 30-27, 30-18 Wednesday night in Minneapolis.

Hamline (17-9, 6-5 in the MIAC) will travel to St. Thomas for the first round of the playoffs, which start next Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. The Pipers defeated the Tommies in the regular season just seven days ago.

The Pipers struggled offensively against the Auggies (11-17, 2-9) all night, hitting just .107 as a team. Junior Shelby Hyllengren led the Pipers with 14 kills. Senior Dana Luiken added 13 kills, and sophomore Amanda Booth had 12 kills.

After losing the first game, the Pipers came back to take game two with a 12-2 spurt to end the game. Hamline had three of their seven service aces on the night during the run - two by junior Sara Burns.

Augsburg rallied to take the final three points of game three to win 30-27. Auggie Dani Boner finished the game with two straight kills. She ended the night with a team-high 15. Katie LaGrave had 11 kills while Julie Jenkins added 10 kills, 22 assists, and 17 digs.

Senior Jenna Witt and first-year Tasha Simmons led the defense with 14 digs apiece. Jenny Nichols dished out 46 assists.

The Pipers will play at St. Thomas on Halloween night. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
