Two Pipers earn MIAC Volleyball Awards; Rollie Co-Coach of the Year

Senior middle hitter Dana Luiken was named All-MIAC first team while outside hitter Tasha Simmons was selected MIAC Rookie of the Year, the conference office announced Wednesday. Head Coach Gina Rollie also earned Co-Coach of the Year honors.

Luiken, from Chatfield, Minn., finished third in the MIAC in hitting percentage at .348. She was sixth in the conference with 4.12 kills per game.

For the season, Luiken had 350 kills with 89 blocks in 90 games. She became the sixth player in Hamline volleyball history to amass 1,000 career kills. She finishes her career fourth on the all-time list with 1,169 kills.

Simmons, from Eagan, Minn., was third on the Pipers with 243 kills in her first season. She was second on the team with 338 digs. She added 19 aces and 32 blocks while playing in 90 games.

Fourth-year head coach Gina Rollie was named Co-Coach of the Year after leading the Pipers to a 17-10 record, 6-5 in the MIAC. She shared the honor with Concordia's Tom Mosser and Gustavus' Kari Eckheart. Hamline earned their first postseason berth since the MIAC moved to a six-team playoff format in 2001. The Pipers finished fifth in the MIAC after being chosen to finish 10th in the coaches preseason poll.
