Swimmers have solid showing at St. Mary's Invitational

The Hamline men's swimming and diving team took second at the St. Mary's Invitational while the women were third Saturday in Winona, Minn.

The men's team scored 572 points on the afternoon to place second of five teams. St. Thomas won the team competition with 756 points. St. Mary's was third.

The women scored 490 points to take third out of six schools. Macalester won the meet with 697 points. St. Thomas was second with 621.5.

The men were paced by sophomore Jonathan Tapia-Rodriguez, who was a four-time winner on the day. Tapia-Rodriguez took the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.85. He also finished 1-2 with first-year Will Khoury-Hanold in the 200-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly.

He teammed up with Khoury-Hanold, Patrick Swartzer, and Jake Burgess to win the 200-yard medley relay.

First-year Teddy Paterson won both distance freestyle events, winning the 1650-yard freestyle in 18:25.96 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:13.57.

Sophomore Jake Burgess also had a big day, winning the 100-yard backstroke and taking second in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events.

On the women's side, Dana Ketcher and Renee Punyko each won three events. Ketcher won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25:48 as well as the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.7. Punyko won the 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard individual medley.

The duo swam with Lindsey Swanson and Becky Moenkhaus to win the 200-yard medley relay.

The Pipers will next compete against UW-River Falls on Dec. 16. Meet time is set for 1:00 p.m.
