Men take fifth, women seventh at MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships

The Hamline men's swimming and diving team edged out St. Thomas for fifth place at the MIAC Championships concluded Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. The Piper women finished seventh in the conference.

The men finished the three-day meet with a score of 297 - one point ahead of St. Thomas for fifth place. St. Olaf won the team competition with 893.5 points.

Sophomore Jonathan Tapia-Rodriguez earned All-MIAC honors after placing third in the 200-yard butterfly. Tapia-Rodriguez completed the finals in 1:53.73 - good for a national 'B' cut qualifying time. The time beat his own school record.

Tapia-Rodriguez also teammed up with Jake Burgess, Ryan Beckman, and Will Khoury-Hanold to take fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:11.06. The time also set a school record.

Diver Jake Kruger added a fifth place finish in the 3-meter dive. Khoury-Hanold reached the 'A' finals of the 200-yard backstroke, finishing seventh in a time of 1:59.61.

First-year Teddy Paterson was 12th in the 1650-yard freestyle while Burgess and Beckman placed 10th and 13th, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle.

The women's team placed seventh in the team competition with 222 points. Gustavus was first with 789 points.

Junior Dana Ketcher earned All-MIAC accolades in her second event, taking second in the 100-yard freestyle. Ketcher posted a time of 53.47.

First-year Renee Punyko qualified for the 'A' finals of the 200-yard backstroke, finishing fourth in a time of 2:14.48. Diver Natalie Netzel added a 14th place finish in the 1-meter dive.
