Swimming and diving teams complete second day at MIAC Championships

The Hamline men's swimming and diving team dropped to sixth while the women's team fell to seventh during the second day of the MIAC Championships held Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

The men's team finished the day with 207 points - seven points behind St. Thomas for fifth place. St. Olaf took over the lead overall with a score of 575.5.

The women's team currently has 163 points - 10 behind sixth place Macalaster. Gustavus leads the team competition with 498 points.

First-year Will Khoury-Hanold had a big day for the Piper men, making the 'A' finals of two events. He finished eighth overall in both the 100-yard butterfly (52.94 in the finals) and 100-yard backstroke (54.81 in the finals).

Sophomore Jonathan Tapia-Rodriguez posted the men's best finish of the day, placing fourth overall in the 100-yard butterfly. He qualified for the 'A' finals with a time of 50.97. He later posted a 51.48 in the finals.

Sophomore Jake Burgess made the 'A' finals of the 100-yard backstroke, finishing seventh (54.11).

First-year Teddy Paterson also tallied individual points for Hamline, placing 13th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.93).

On the women's side, first-year Renee Punyko made the 'A' finals of her second event, placing fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. Punyko had a time of 1:56.9 in the finals. Junior Dana Ketcher finished 10th in the same event with a time of 1:59.66.

First-year Becky Taylor was 11th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.04), and senior Lindsey Swanson was 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.1).

The Pipers will conclude the MIAC Championships on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
