Swimming diving take second, third at Macalester Invitational

The Hamline men's swimming and diving team placed second while the women were third at the Macalester Invitational held Saturday in St. Paul, Minn.

The men's team scored 377 points as a team. St. Thomas won the team competition with 563 points. Macalester was third, and St. Mary's was fourth.

Sophomore Jake Burgess and Jonathan Tapia-Rodriguez were each three-time individual winners for the Pipers. Burgess won the 100 and 200-meter backstroke in 1:01.79 and 2.20.95, respectively, to go along with a win in the 100-meter freestyle (54.54). Tapia Rodriguez added victories in the 100-meter butterfly (59.02), 200-meter butterfly (2:13.87), and 400-meter individual medley (5:05.96).

First-year Teddy Paterson added a pair of victories, winning the 400 and 800-meter races.

On the women's side, Hamline finished with 282 points - behind host Macalester with 409 and St. Thomas with 402. Concordia was fourth with St. Mary's fifth.

Hamline dominated the sprint freestyle events on the day. The Pipers finished 1-2 in the 500-meter freestyle as first-year Becky Moenkhaus placed first with a time of 28:03. Junior Dana Ketcher was second.

In the 100-yard freestyle, the Pipers swept the top three spots. Moenkhaus was first, followed by Renee Punyko and Ketcher.

Hamline will next compete in the St. Mary's Invitational held Dec. 2.
