Swimming and diving teams take second, third at St. Mary's Invitational

The Hamline men's swimming and diving team placed second while the women were third at the St. Mary's Invitational held Saturday in Winona, Minn.

The men's team finished with 544 points for second place. Luther won the team competition with 874 points. St. Thomas finished third with 509.

First-year Jonathan Tapia won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.62. He also posted a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (55.95) and third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.39).

First-year Jake Burgess placed second in three individual events.  He was second in the 200-yard and 50-yard freestyle events. He was also second in the 200-yard backstroke, crossing the finish line in 2:04.51.

Burgess was joined by Ryan Beckman, Tapia, and John Burgess in the 200-yard freestyle relay team that broke the previous pool record while finishing third.

Junior Jake Kruger was third in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.  Junior Ryan Beckman was third in the 200-yard butterfly.

On the women's side, the Pipers were third with 495 points. Luther won the event with 619 points. St. Thomas was second with 585.5.

Sophomore Dana Ketcher won the individual title in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.95.

Sophomore Aly Janzen was second in both the 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle events. First-year Angela Schroeder was third in the 200-yard backstroke, and senior Linsi Ulstad was third in the 1650-yard freestyle.

The Pipers will compete against St. Mary's and Augsburg Next Saturday.  Meet time is set for 1:00 p.m.
