Men's swimming and diving finish fifth at MIAC Championships; women take seventh

The Hamline men's swimming and diving team finished in fifth place at the MIAC Championships completed Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. The women's team took seventh place overall.

The Piper men finished with 318 team points for fifth place. Gustavus won the team competition with 867 points. St. Olaf was second at 802.

First-year Jonathan Tapia was the only Piper swimmer to make the 'A' finals on the final day of competition. Tapia took second in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing the the race in a national B cut time 1:54.22. His time broke the school record in the 200 butterfly.

The divers had another big day for the men as Julian Borgia placed third in the 3-meter dive. Teammate Jake Kruger was fifth overall.

The Pipers 400-yard freestyle relay team of Tapia, Jake Burgess, John Burgess, and Ryan Beckman broke the school record with a time of 3:12.02.

Chas Grant, Beckman, John Burgess, Mike Matteson, and Patrick Swartzer all scored points in indvidual events for the Pipers.

On the women's side, the Pipers finished with 203.5 points for seventh. St. Olaf won the championships with 763.5 points. Carleton had 617.5 for second place.

Angela Schroeder and Lindsey Swanson each made the 'A' finals of the 200-yard breaststroke. Schroeder took seventh in the event in a time of 2:35.3. Swanson was eighth in 2:36.45.

Senior Linsi Ulstad added a ninth place performance in the 1650-yard freestyle event.
