Men's swimming and diving jump to fifth; women fall to seventh in day two of MIAC Championships

The Hamline men's swimming and diving team moved into fifth place while the women fell to seventh in day two of the MIAC Championships held Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

The Pipers surged thanks to solid performances in the 1-meter dive by Julian Borgia and Jake Kruger. Borgia was second in the event, posting a score of 224.6. Kruger was fourth, finishing with 209.55.

Hamline now has 213 points in the championships.

First-year Jake Burgess made the 'A' finals in two events, taking sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (53.22) and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.95). Burgess set the school record in the 100-yard backstroke.

First-year Jonathan Tapia reached the 'A' final of the 100-yard butterfly. He took sixth place with a time of 51.95.

Andrew Jagger (400-yard IM), Brian Viger (100-yard butterfly 100-yard backstroke), Pat Swartzer (100-yard breaststroke), Mike Matteson (100-yard breaststroke), and Ryan Beckman (200-yard freestyle) all earned points in the 'B' finals for the Pipers.

On the women's side, Aly Janzen took 10th in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:55.37. She was the highest place of any Hamline women's athlete on the day.

Angie Schroeder (100-yard breaststroke), Taylor VanDorp (100-yard backstroke), and Katie Yohnk (100-yard backstroke) also scored for Hamline.

The women's team stands at 139.5 points for the championships.

The final day of the MIAC Championships will be held tomorrow at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
