Men's swimming takes second at Macalester Invitational; women take third

Sophomore Julian Borgia and first-year Jonathan Tapia and Jake Burgess each won two individual events as the Hamline men's swimming and diving team placed second in the Macalester Invitational held Saturday in St. Paul, Minn. The Hamline women's team placed third overall.

The Pipers finished with 394 points to take second. St. Thomas won the team competition with 460 points. Host Macalester was third with 281. There were five teams competing in the invitational.

On the women's side, St. Thomas won with 438. Macalester was second with 393. Hamline was third with 330 points. There were seven teams in the event.

Borgia won both diving competitions, taking the 1-meter dive with a score of 192.40 and 3-meter with 177.90. Tapia was first in both the 400 IM (5:07.78) and 100 butterfly (58.11). The time in the 100-meter butterfly was a pool and Macalester Invitational record.

Burgess won the 100 backstroke (1:01.67) and 200 IM (2:21.21).

Both Tapia and Burgess also competed on the Pipers' winning 200-yard medley relay team that finished in a time of 1:52.97. Pat Swartzer and John Burgess completed the winning quartet.

Junior Ryan Backman added a first place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:10.28.

For the women, Aly Janzen and Dana Ketcher each won individual events.  Janzen won the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:38.23, and Ketcher with the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 28.96.

Janzen was also second in both the 400 freestyle and 100 butterfly.  Ketcher was second in the 100 freestyle. Senior Linsi Ulstad also added a second place finish in the 800 freestyle.

The Pipers will next compete at UW-Eau Claire on Tuesday. Meet time is set for 6:00 p.m.
