Softball falls in first round of MIAC Playoffs

The top-seeded Tommies defeated Hamine 8-0 in six inning during first round action of the MIAC Playoffs held Friday afternoon at Ona Orth Field on the campus of Bethel University.

St. Thomas (39-2), who entered the tournament as the top-ranked team in Division III, broke open the game with a four-run second inning. Tommie pitcher Maria Bye capped the inning with a two-run single to make the score 5-0.

Bye finished 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs. On the mound, she pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball. She allowed one hit while walking four and striking out three.

Tommie reliever Carrie Embree (11-1) struck out seven in 3 2/3 innings to earn the win.

Hamline starter Theresa Boleen (13-12) gave up eight runs - four earned - on 10 hits. She fanned one and walked three.

Third baseman Brenna Healy, shortstop Sophie Davidson, and catcher Ashley Anderberg all added hits for the Pipers, who are making their third playoff appearance in the last four years.
