St. Mary's eliminates Pipers from softball playoffs

St. Mary's defeated Hamline 7-1 to eliminate the Pipers from the MIAC Playoffs Friday afternoon at Helen Meredith Field.

The Cardinals (23-14) jumped on Hamline (21-17-1) for two runs in both the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead.

Cardinal shortstop Hanna Schmitt started the scoring with a two-run double to left center in the first. Center fielder Danielle Geske added an RBI double in the second while left fielder Cassie Otte hit a run-scoring single.

Otte went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run and two RBIs in the game. Geske was 3-for-3 on the day for St. Mary's

Geske and Otte pushed the lead to 6-0 with RBI base hits in the fifth inning.

The Pipers kept the game close with some good defense. Left fielder Grace Weinreich threw out a runner at home to end the third. Center fielder Jourdan Ulrich did the same to end the threat in the fifth.

In the end, the Pipers couldn't muster enough offense. Hamline added their lone run of the game in the sixth when Ulrich scored on a St. Mary's error to make the score 6-1. Ulrich went 2-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore Grace Weinreich added two hits for the Pipers.

Cardinal pitcher Megan Wallisch allowed one run - none earned - on seven hits. She struck out three and walked one. Hamline starter Theresa Boleen gave up seven runs - six earned - on 10 hits. She struck out two and walked seven.
