Softball sweeps Macalester 1-0, 5-3
After five scoreless innings, the Pipers (10-8, 4-4 in the MIAC) cracked the scoreboard in the sixth. With two out, Davidson lined a shot to the third base side that bounced through the hole and scored left fielder Grace Weinreich's with the game's only run. Hamline starting pitcher Theresa Boleen (6-6) went six innings, allowing just four hits. She fanned four and walked one. First-year Rachel Roberts pitched a scoreless seventh inning for her first save of the season. Scot starter Olivia Abbott (5-8) scattered four hits as well, but a one-out error led to the Pipers' go-ahead score. In game two, the Pipers jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held on for a 5-3 win. Hamline scored a single run in the first off Abbott before putting three across in the second. First-year Kala Ebbe started the scoring with an RBI double. Sophomore Kellie Hoen added a run-scoring triple and later scored on a Holly Wiborg groundout. That would be all Roberts (4-1) needed. The first-year allowed seven hits in the complete game win. She struck out three and walked one. Macalester (6-17, 3-5) climbed back into the game with a two-run double by Crystal Bariga in the sixth inning, but the Pipers responded with an insurance run in their half of the sixth to put the game away. Hoen led the way for Hamline, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Leadoff hitter Jourdan Ulrich stole two bases - three in the doubleheader - to give her 14 for the season. The school record is 19 set by Emily Deuth in 2001. Hamline will play at Gustavus Tuesday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. The games will start at 4:00 p.m. |
