Softball blanked by Gustavus

Brenna Healy Ashley Anderberg
The Hamline fastpitch softball team was shut out by Gustavus 4-0 and 6-0 Tuesday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn.

In game one, the Pipers (10-10, 4-6 in the MIAC) were held to just two hits by Gustavus (18-2, 10-0). Gustie pitcher Joyce DeWitz (11-1) allowed just a leadoff single by Piper center fielder Jourdan Ulrich in the first and by shortstop Sophie Davidson in the seventh.

DeWitz fanned 10 and walked none in the contest in the complete game win.

Gustavus scored single runs in the first, third, fifth, and sixth off Hamline starter Theresa Boleen (6-7). Boleen gave up just three hits in the game - two by left fielder Erin Ge, but walked five and the Piper defense committed two errors.

In game two, Gustavus scored six runs off Hamline starter Rachel Roberts (4-2), and DeWitz once again shut out the Pipers on five hits.

Trailing 2-0 after the first inning, Hamline had their best chance to score in the second. Three straight singles by Brenna Healy, Davidson, and Ashley Anderberg loaded the bases to lead off the inning, but the Pipers hit into a double play to end the threat.

Healy and Anderberg each had two hits for the Pipers. Gustavus pounded out 11 hits in the game - three by center fielder Emily Klein.
