Softball splits one-run decisions

The Pipers split a pair of 1-0 games to St. Scholastica, winning the first on a Sarah Dittberner double in the fifth while dropping the second game Monday afternoon at Helen Meredith Field.

The teams combined for just eight hits in the game one and nine in game two.

The Pipers (16-11) won game one with a pair of base hits in the fifth. With one out catcher Ashley Anderberg and Dittberner hit back-to-back doubles to the lone run of the game.

Dittberner finished the game with two of the Pipers' four hits in the game.

Sophomore pitcher Theresa Boleen hurled 6 1/3 innings of scoreless ball to earn her 10th with of the year. She struck out five and walked four.

She worked out of her biggest jam of the game in the fourth inning. With no outs, the Saints (14-14) loaded the bases, but Boleen was able to induce a short pop fly, and infield fly, and an other pop out to end the threat.

First-year pitcher Rachel Roberts secured the final two outs of the seventh for her second save of the year.

In game two, the Saints returned the favor, scoring a single run in the third off Roberts (6-3) for the win. Third baseman Brenna Zavodnik tallied the game's only run when she advanced home on an Erica Kozacek steal.

Hamline was held to four hits in the contest - two by second baseman Holly Wiborg.

Mary Jo McNamee (2-1) pitched 6 2/3 innings for the win. Rilee Dawson picked up her first save of the year, pitching the final out with the tying run of first.

The Pipers will complete a doubleheader with Carleton on Tuesday. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
