Simple manufactured runs made the difference for the Hamline University Pipers, as they defeated visiting UW-Stout in non-conference play, 2-0 and 1-0, to close out the regular season.

The Pipers’ two runs in the opener were scored in the third inning, as Jourdan Ulrich (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) hit a leadoff single to get on base. Grace Weinreich (Jr., Wahkon, Minn.) also singled, putting runners on first and second. A ground out followed by a bunt scored Ulrich and moved Weinreich to third, before she stole home on a double-steal for the second run.

During the break between games, the Pipers honored their lone senior, infielder Sara Mickelson (West St. Paul, Minn.), as she played in her final doubleheader at Helen Meredith Field.

In game two, Hamline’s lone run came in the fifth inning, another leadoff single, this one from Norah Antil (Jr., Pflugerville, Texas). Kellie Hoen (Jr., Cologne, Minn.) came in at first to pinch run for Antil, and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Kristi Gravem (Fy., Maplewood, Minn.).

Jessalyn Weaver (So., Eagan, Minn.) threw her eighth shutout and 16th complete game of the season in game one, improving to 12-9, while Kelsey Tacheny (Fy., St. Paul, Minn.) tallied her second collegiate shutout and 11th complete game in the finale.

With the win, the Pipers conclude the regular season with a record of 24-12, 16-6 MIAC,  while the Blue Devils fall to 7-28, 0-16 WIAC.

Hamline will play Gustavus on Friday, May 2, at 3:00 p.m. at the Rice Creek Softball Complex in Shoreview in the first round of the MIAC playoffs.
