Pipers sweep Scots, stay in playoff hunt

The Pipers posted 4-1 and 8-6 victories over Macalester College  in their return to their home field for the first time after 10 games on the road to rise to 21-11, 15-5 MIAC and to stay in the hunt for an MIAC playoff berth.

After two scoreless innings in the opener, Hamline’s Sophie Davidson (So, St. Paul, Minn.) hit a one-out single, stole second, and scored on a single by Grace Weinreich (Jr,. Wahkon, Minn.) to put the Pipers up 1-0.

Hamline added two runs in the fourth and then one more in the fifth to go up 4-0. The Scots scored their lone run of the game in the top of the seventh. In the seventh, Macalester had the bases loaded with one out before the Pipers battled their way out of the inning.

In game two, Hamline took an early 6-0 lead as Brenna Healy (So., Mounds View, Minn.) singled home two runs in the first inning, Sara Mickelson (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn.) doubled home two runs in the third, and Ashley Anderberg’s (So., Circle Pines, Minn.) third homer of the season brought home two more in the third.

Macalester responded with four runs in the fourth inning, beginning with Crystal Barriga’s (So., Broomfield, Colo.) first of two homeruns in the game, as she brought home two with her shot to left field.

Heidi Larsen’s (Fy., Andover, Minn.) first collegiate homerun came in the leadoff position in the fourth inning, giving the Pipers a 7-4 lead.

Down 7-4, Barriga hit her second home run of the game, fifth of the year, came in the fifth inning, driving home two ore runs to make the score 7-6, but that was all the scoring the Scots would manage.

The Pipers added one  more run in the bottom of the fifth to make the final score 8-6.

In the doubleheader, Hamline’s Jourdan Ulrich (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) went 6-for-7, including a triple, with three runs scored and was 4-for-4 in stolen bases attempts. Healy went 3-for-6 with a run and three RBI, while Anderberg was 2-for-6 with three runs scores and two RBI.

Jessalyn Weaver (So., Eagan, Minn.) upped her record to 10-9 with the complete-game win in the opener, and picked up her second save in game two. Kelsey Tacheny (Fy., St. Paul, Minn.) threw five innings for the win in game two, improving her record to 10-2 .

Macalester was led by Barriga’s 5-for-7 hitting, including her two homeruns, scoring two runs and batting in four. Katie Grudnowski (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) went 4-for-7 from the plate with two runs scored for the Scots.

With the win, the Pipers record remains are at 21-11, 15-5 MIAC while the Scots fall to 8-24, 3-17  MIAC. Hamline will host St. Catherine on Monday, April 28, at 4:00 p.m. in an MIAC match-up.
