Pipers split with Auggies

Despite a big inning in the first game, and because of a big inning in the second game, the Hamline University softball team brought home a split, with a 5-4 loss and a 14-9 win, from their rainy doubleheader at Augsburg on Friday.

The Pipers opened up the first game quickly, scoring all four of their runs in the first inning, started by a leadoff homerun by Sophie Davidson (So., St. Paul, Minn.). It was her eighth round-tripper of the season.

Hamline then manufactured three more runs off of series of walks, steals, wild pitches, a single and an Auggie error to take the 4-0 lead.

Augsburg chipped away slowly at the lead, though, putting two runs on the board in the third, and one run each in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings for the win.

Game two played out the opposite way though, as Augsburg jumped out to an 8-2 lead after the first three innings, before the Pipers put together an eight run fourth to take the lead.

Hamline used seven hits, starting with a leadoff double from Ashley Anderberg (So., Circle Pines, Minn.) and capitalized on an Auggie error in tallying the eight runs.

Leading 10-9 heading into the seventh, Anderberg gave the Pipers all of the insurance runs they would need - as she came to the plate with the bases loaded and slammed her second homerun of the year for the 14-9 victory.

In the doubleheader, Grace Weinreich (Jr., Wahkon, Minn.) went 4-for-8 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI to lead the Pipers, while Anderberg had five RBI to go with her three hits, scoring three runs. Jourdan Ulrich (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) and Kellie Hoen (Jr., Cologne, Minn.) also had three hits apiece for the Pipers.

The Pipers are now 19-11, 13-5 MIAC while the Auggies are 17-21, 13-7 MIAC. Hamline hosts Macalester tomorrow, Saturday, April 26, at 1:00 p.m.
