Hamline defeats UW-Stout in two neck-and-neck matches
The Pipers were victorious over non-conference UW-Stout on Tuesday, defeating the Blue Devils by one run in each game at Meredith Field.
Senior Rachael Young was walked to start the first inning for the Pipers (19-19, 7-13 in the MIAC). Jordan Ulrich singled to put two runners on base. Hamline’s next batter, Sarah Mickelson, reached on a fielder’s choice to put three runners on base for the Pipers.
With the bases loaded, sophomore Lindsey Lingl was walked to drive in Young for the first and only run of the game. Both teams would remain scoreless for the rest of the match, giving the Pipers a 1-0 victory in game one.
In game two, the Pipers took a dominating lead after the first inning. With two runners on base, sophomore Sarah Mickelson hit a home run to put Hamline up 3-0. Neither team scored again until the fifth inning.
UW-Stout rallied back in the final two innings. They drove in two runs in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by first-year Amanda McKellips to bring the score within one. At the top of the sixth inning, the Blue Devils scored three more runs to take a 5-3 lead over the Pipers.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pipers answered back with three runs of their own. Lingl hit a two-run double with no outs to tie the score. With two outs, Young hit a single up right field to drive in the game-winning run for Hamline.
First-year Theresa Boleen earned her 17th win at the mound for the Pipers after the sweep. Boleen is currently tied for second place on Hamline’s all-time list for pitching wins.
The Pipers will host their final match of the season with Concordia on Wednesday. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
