Piper softball defeats St. Olaf in Northfield, Minn.
An error by the Oles in the eighth inning gave Hamline the advantage in game one, while a strong start in game two led the Pipers to a two-game sweep of St. Olaf on Saturday.
The Pipers (13-19, 5-13 in the MIAC) were tied early on in game one. Back-to-back singles by first-year Grace Weinreich and senior Rachael Young drove in two runs for Hamline in the second inning.
The score remained tied until the sixth inning. Junior Holly Wiborg singled to bring in a run and give the Pipers a 3-2 advantage. The Oles answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth.
Hamline scored again to start the seventh inning to tie the score and force the game into extra innings. The Pipers scored their final run on an error by St. Olaf to end the game in a 5-4 victory. Young, Weinreich, and junior Katie Prasek each tallied two hits in the contest.
In game two, the Pipers jumped to an early lead by scoring four runs in the first two innings. Prasek and Weinreich each drove in an RBI during the run.
Young, Wiborg, sophomore Lindsey Lingl and first-year Sarah Dittberner tallied two hits apiece for the Pipers. Weinreich added two RBIs, including a home run in the seventh inning.
First-year Theresa Boleen pitched two full games for the Pipers, earning her 13th win of the season at the mound.
The Pipers will host a non-conference match against Northwestern on Monday. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
