Pipers sweep non-conference games at Meredith Field
Hamline’s consistency at the plate was the contributing factor in the Pipers 8-5 and 12-6 victories over Northwestern on Monday night.
In game one, the Pipers (15-19, 5-13 in the MIAC) outscored their opponent 6-0 in the first four innings. The first run of the game was scored on a Northwestern error. With two runners on base, first-year Grace Weinreich hit her second home run in as many games to give Hamline the lead.
In the third inning, sophomore Sarah Mickelson and junior Katie Prasek scored on unearned runs for Hamline. Northwestern scored their first points of the game in the fifth inning on a throwing error by the Pipers. They would score once more in the fifth to bring the score within three.
Hamline scored two more runs in their final two innings at the plate. First-year Sarah Dittberner made it to home plate on a passed ball in the fifth inning, while Kristina Hedberg hit an RBI single to drive in Hamline’s final run of the game.
In game two, the Pipers scored at least once every inning for the win. Five of Hamline’s 12 runs came in the second inning. Weinreich started the scoring with a three-run triple. Senior Rachael Young and Prasek each hit RBI singles to complete the inning.
Weinreich would triple again in the third inning for another Hamline run. Young drove in one run in the seventh inning on an RBI double, and the Pipers final run of the game came in the sixth inning on a ground-out shot by Dittberner. Northwestern did not come within three runs in the second game.
First-year Theresa Boleen pitched both games to earn her 14th and 15th wins of the season at the mound.
The Pipers return to MIAC games on Wednesday when they travel to Augsburg for a 5:00 p.m. game time.
