Fastpitch softball knocks off tenth-ranked North Central

The Hamline fastpitch softball team started the season with a pair of wins, including an 12-2 victory over tenth-ranked North Central Sunday in Ft. Myers, Fla.

The Pipers (2-0) scored three times in the third and six times in the fifth inning to break open their second contest of the season.

First-year Kellie Hoen went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a two-run single in the third inning. First-year Kristina Hedberg and Grace Weinreich each added two hits in the game.

Sophomores Lindsey Lingl and Sara Mickelson each added two RBIs in the game. Mickelson hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Pipers a lead. Mickelson and Weinreich each scored three times in the game.

First-year Theresa Boleen (2-0) scattered six hits through seven innings to earn the win.

In the season opener, the Pipers scored three times in the seventh inning to defeat Middlebury 5-3.

With the score tied at 2-2, Mickelson hit her first home run of the season - a three-run bomb in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

Weinreich hit her first career home run on the second inning to give Hamline an early 2-1 lead.
