The Hamline fastpitch softball team defeated both Grinnell and SUNY-New Paltz Monday in Ft. Myers, Fla. to move to 4-0 on the season.

The Pipers scored four times in the fifth inning to defeat Grinnell 5-2. After two singles and a walk loaded the bases, sophomore Sara Mickelson hit a grand slam to break a 1-1 tie. It was Mickelson's third home run in three games on the season.

Senior Rachael Young added a solo shot in the third inning for the Pipers other score.

First-year pitcher Theresa Boleen made the runs stand up as she scattered seven hits through seven innings. She allowed just one earned run. She struck out six and walked three.

In game two, Young and first Grace Weinreich each had two RBIs in the Pipers 4-3 win over SUNY-New Paltz.

Trailing 1-0, Weinreich hit a two-run single in the sixth inning to give Hamline the lead. Young would add her second home run of the day - a two-run shot - in the seventh for a 4-1 edge.

New Paltz would put the winning run on first base in the bottom of the seventh, but Boleen induced a game-ending groundout to secure the win.

Hamline will play UW-Superior and Babson on Tuesday. Game time is set for 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
