Piper fastpitch team drops two games against Gustavus

Rachael Young Jourdan Ulrich

A slow start at the plate was a contributing factor behind Hamline’s 0-10, 1-6 defeat against the Gusties at Meredith Field.

The Pipers (9-16, 3-10 in the MIAC) tallied just two hits in the first game.  First-year Jourdan Ulrich and third baseman Sarah Dittberner tallied one hit apiece.  Despite striking out four, pitcher Theresa Boleen took the loss for the Pipers in five innings.

In game two, the Pipers started the scoring and took an early lead.  In the third inning, senior Rachael Young drilled a shot up the center to get on base.  Soon after, two successful bunts by Sarah Mickelson and Ulrich loaded the bases for Hamline.  Junior Katie Prasek was walked to bring in Young for the first score of the game.

Gustavus (16-5, 10-1 in the MIAC) fought back in the fifth inning with a run of their own to tie the score at one.  With the bases loaded, the Pipers turned a double play ball to end the inning and take another chance at the plate.

Despite getting out of the jam, Hamline was unable to stop Gustavus’ five runs in the final inning for a 1-6 defeat.

The Pipers will make up their match against Martin Luther on Wednesday.  Opening pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
