Fastpitch softball loses to St. Benedict

Blazer Christina Gardner singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift St. Benedict to a 6-1 and 5-4 sweep of the Pipers Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph, Minn.

With two on and two out in a 4-4 game, Gardner singled to center to bring home the winning run.

After falling behind 4-2, the Pipers (8-10, 2-8 in the MIAC) battled back to knot the game at 4-4 with two runs in the sixth. Kristina Hedberg's RBI single plated Sara Mickelson. A Blazer error on the play also allowed a run to score.

Mickelson, Hedberg, and Katie Prasek all had two hits in the contest for the Pipers, who totaled nine for the game.

First-year Theresa Boleen (8-10) scattered five hits, but took the loss. She struck out three and walked three.

In game one, St. Benedict (7-11, 4-2) scored four times in the fifthon Patty Devoy's grand slam to break open a close game and take a 6-1 win.

First-year Jourdan Ulrich went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Pipers. Prasek had two hits in the game.

Boleen struck out three and walked four in the loss.

The Pipers will play at St. Scholastica on Monday. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
