Softball drops two close games against the Royals

Holly Wiborg
Despite taking an early lead in game one and tallying 11 hits in game two, the Pipers lost 4-3 and 8-5 against Bethel on Thursday in St. Paul, Minn.

In game one, the Pipers (11-19, 3-13 in the MIAC) got ahead by scoring three runs in the second inning.  Walks from first-years Sarah Dittberner and Kristina Hedberg and a single by sophomore Lindsey Lingl loaded the bases for Hamline.

Holly Wiborg and Grace Weinreich hit back-to-back singles for a combined three RBI’s to give the Pipers the lead.  Weinreich went 3-3 at the plate for Hamline.

The Royals (14-17, 5-11 MIAC) answered back with a run in the third inning, making the score 1-3.  Both teams remained scoreless until the seventh inning.  Bethel tallied three runs in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded double for the win.

The Pipers stayed neck-and-neck to start game two.  Both teams were tied at one after the first inning, but Bethel pulled away and scored seven runs in the next two innings.

Senior Rachael Young tripled to start the third inning for the Pipers and scored on a single by Katie Prasek.  Hedberg singled to bring in another run and bring the score to 3-8.

Hamline fought back, scoring two runs in the fifth inning.  Sophomore Sara Mickelson and Prasek each tallied a double in the run.  Prasek went 4-4 in game two.

Despite a solid effort at the plate, the Pipers committed five errors in the second game.

Hamline will host their fourth game of the week in a conference matchup against St. Olaf on Saturday.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
