Pipers score 25 runs in two games to defeat Augsburg
First-year Grace Weinreich went 3-4 at the plate with four RBIs to lead the team in game one, while five players tallied two hits apiece in game two as Hamline swept the Auggies on Wednesday in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Pipers (17-19, 7-13 in the MIAC) relied on their consistency at the plate in game one. After taking an early 1-0 lead, Hamline drove in three more runs in the second inning.
Weinreich doubled to center field in the second inning for her first RBI of the game. The other two scores were both unearned; junior Holly Wiborg scored on an error by Augsburg’s pitcher and Weinreich was brought in off of a wild pitch.
Augsburg would score three runs in the next two innings to take a 5-4 lead.
In the fifth inning, Hamline came back to score five runs. Sophomore Sara Mickelson doubled to left field, brining in one run to tie the score at five. An RBI single by right fielder Lindsey Lingl gave the Pipers the lead, which they would hold for the remainder of the game.
Weinreich hit a three-run home run to seal the win for Hamline. It was her third home run in four games. She ended the game 3-4 with four RBIs to lead the team. Mickelson hit 2-3 at the plate and drove in three runs.
The Pipers scored two more runs in the sixth inning for a 11-5 victory.
Hamline took a dominating lead in game two by scoring seven runs in the first inning en route to a 14-8 win.
Lingl, Wiborg, and first-years Jourdan Ulrich, Sarah Dittberner and Theresa Boleen each tallied two hits for the Pipers. Wiborg led the team with two RBIs.
Boleen struck out ten batters at the mound for Hamline to earn the win for both games.
The Pipers will host Concordia on Saturday for Family Day. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
