Men's soccer defeats St. Thomas, remains unbeaten

Mike Landerholm and the Hamline defense allowed only two shots on goal in the Saturday's 1-0 win over St. Thomas.
Senior Jacob Helling scored his eighth goal of the season as the Pipers defeated St. Thomas for a second straight year, beating the Tommies 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Pat Paterson Fields.

The Pipers (8-0-1, 3-0-1 in the MIAC) kept the school's longest unbeaten streak to start a season intact with the victory.

The game also marked the second consecutive year Hamline has beaten St. Thomas. Prior to the Pipers' two victories in 2005 and 2006, Hamline had not defeated St. Thomas since 1980.

Helling scored the game's only goal on an assist from Jason Engedal at 20:40 of the first half.

From there, the Pipers' stingy defense held St. Thomas (7-2-2, 2-1-1) to two shots on goal in the game. The Pipers, who are ranked ninth in the West Region in the NSCAA/adidas rankings, also had two shots on goal in the contest.

Junior goalkeeper Andrew Clement posted his 13th career shutout, making two saves in the game. Daniel Hutton took the loss for St. Thomas with one save.

The Pipers will play at St. Scholastica on Wednesday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
