Helling named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team

Senior forward Jacob Helling was named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team, CoSIDA announced on Monday.

Helling, from Brookings, S.D., becomes the second Hamline men's soccer player in as many season to be named Academic All-American. His twin brother, Andrew, earn Academic All-America second team accolades after the 2005 season.

Helling was named the MIAC's Most Valuable Player this season after he led the entire MIAC in scoring for all games with 14 goals and four assists on the season for 32 points. In conference play, Helling tied for the MIAC lead with 17 points (eight goals, one assist).

He led the Pipers to their second consecutive MIAC Playoff appearance, where they advanced to the MIAC Championship game. Hamline finished the season with a record of 12-5-2, 5-3-2 in the MIAC.

To be eligible for Academic All-America, an athlete must be a starter or key reserve of their team and hold a grade point average of 3.2 or better. Helling, an art major, has a 3.42 grade point average.
