Helling named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V

Senior men's soccer player Jacob Helling was named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V for the second time in his career, CoSIDA announced on Thursday.

Helling, from Brookings, S.D., was named to the Academic All-District team in 2005 with his twin brother Andrew.

This year, Helling leads the Pipers (12-4-2) with 14 goals and four assists for 32 points.

In all games, Helling was the MIAC leader in goals (14) and points (32). He has eight more points than the second-leading scorer in the conference and four more goals than the next closest player.

In conference play, Helling scored 17 points (eight goals, one assist) to tie for the conference lead.

Helling led the Pipers to their second straight MIAC Playoff appearance. Hamline defeated St. John's in the MIAC Semifinals on Tuesday and will play Gustavus in the MIAC Finals for the right to play in the NCAA Tournament.

To be eligible for Academic All-District an athlete must be a starter or key reserve of their team and hold a grade point average of 3.2 or better. Helling, an art major, has a 3.42 grade point average.
