Men's soccer tripped up by Gustavus

Drew Lukas
Gustie Alex Groth scored early in the first half, and Gustavus went on to a 2-0 victory over the Pipers Wednesday afternoon at Pat Paterson Field.

Gustavus (12-1-1, 7-1 in the MIAC) scored at the 6:39 mark of the first half when Groth netted his fifth goal of the season off a corner kick.

From there, the Pipers (10-3-1, 5-2-1) rallied with multiple scoring chances, but could crack the scoring column. First-year Courtney Duffield rattled a shot off the cross bar late in the first half. Early in the second half after an initial shot was saved by Gustie goalkeeper Tyler Garry, senior Jeremy Wade had a rebound shot saved by a Gustavus defender at the goal line.

The Gusties would get their final tally at 89:43 on Mike Butterworth's sixth of the season.

The Pipers outshot the Gusties 10-9 in the contest, but Gustavus held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.

Clement made five saves for the Pipers. Garry stopped three shots for Gustavus.

The Pipers will travel to St. Olaf on Tuesday. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
