Men's hockey drops 3-1 decision to St. Olaf

Hamline netminder Matt Wanvig stopped 33 shots, but it wasn't enough as St. Olaf avoided the sweep with a 3-1 win over the Pipers Saturday night in Northfield, Minn.

St. Olaf (7-12-2, 6-4-2 in the MIAC) held a 36-17 advantage in shots on goal, but Hamline (7-12, 3-7) trailed only 2-1 when Jimmy VanAsch scored an unassisted goal at 3:07 of the third period.

The score remained the same until the Oles' Nick Stalock tallied an unassisted power-play goal at 16:10 of the period for the game's final score.

The Pipers fell behind 1-0 on a Matt LaBombard goal at 2:46 of the first period. After a scoreless second period, Andy Ockuly gave the Oles a two-goal lead 49 seconds into the third period.

Wanvig made 33 saves, including 21 of the first 22 shots he faced. Jeff Wilde made 16 saves for the Oles.

Hamline was whistled for eight penalties for 16 minutes. St. Olaf committed three penalties for six minutes. The Oles were 1-of-8 on the power play while Hamline was 0-of-3.

The Pipers will travel to Bethel Friday night. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
