Men's hockey scores in final minutes to beat St. Olaf

Matt Buckley
Forward Kyle Kurr scored the game-winning goal at 18:06 of the third period to lift Hamline to a 4-3 victory over St. Olaf Friday night at Drake Arena.

Kurr's power-play goal - his third of the season - came off a rebound of a Joe Long shot at 18:06.

The Pipers (7-11, 3-6 in the MIAC) came back from a 3-1 second period deficit to score three straight goals. Sophomore Steve Festler scored his second goal of the evening at 17:28 of the second period after poking the puck free from a scrum in front of the net and beating Ole netminder Jeff Wilde.

Sophomore Dustin Fulton knotted the score a 3-3 at 19:44 when Long fed the forward on the doorstep. Long finished the evening with three assists.

The Pipers went 2-of-3 on the power play on the evening. The Oles (6-12-2, 5-4-2) were 1-of-4 with an extra skater.

St. Olaf scored three unanswered in the second period. Justin Green, Dylan Mueller, and Jeff Budish all tallied goals for the Oles.

Hamline netted the only goal of the first period when Festler fired the puck into the Ole zone from the red line. The puck took a funny bounce and skipped past Wilde for the game's first goal.

Hamline netminder Matt Wanvig made 32 saves for the win. Wilde stopped 22 shots in a losing effort.

The two teams will square off again Saturday night in Northfield, Minn. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
