Men's hockey loses in overtime

Forwards Matt Buckley and Steve Festler each scored a pair of goals, but St. Mary's came away with a 5-4 overtime win Friday night in Winona, Minn.

The Pipers (5-11, 1-6 in the MIAC) led 4-3 after Festler's second goal of the game at 6:03 of the third period before St. Mary's (7-10-1, 4-4-1) answered back to knot the score at 4-4 on a Mike Christensen goal.

In the closing minutes of regulation, Festler was given a five-minute major for checking from behind. On the ensuing power-play in overtime, Matt Staehely tallied his third goal of the game at 1:02 to give the Cardinals the win.

Hamline opened the scoring in the first period on Matt Buckley's fourth goal of the season at 5:45, but the Cardinals went into the intermission up 2-1 after Cullum Buetow-Staples and Staehely tallied goals.

The game was tied at 3-3 after two periods as Festler and Buckley each scored in the period.

The Pipers held a 36-32 advantage in shots on goal in the contest. Hamline netminder Matt Wanvig made 27 saves in the contest. Cardinal Dan Smith stopped 32 shots in the win.

The two team will play Saturday night at Drake Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
