Festler's hat trick gives Pipers St. Michael's Tournament championship

Sophomore Steve Festler scored three goals as the Hamline men's hockey team won the St. Michael's Tournament with a 5-3 victory over the host Purple Knights Sunday afternoon in Burlington, Vt.

Festler netted a pair of power play goals in the contest, including his final goal at 18:51 of the third period to cement the Piper win. Festler scored a goal in each period and added an assist for the Pipers (4-8).

He was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Festler was joined by Dustin Fulton and Matt Wanvig on the All-Tournament team.

Hamline jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first period. Sophomore Joe Long scored his 11th goal of the season at 2:09 to give Hamline the lead. At 4:24, Festler tallied his first goal of the game.

The Purple Knights (3-5) scored on the power play to cut the lead in half heading into the first intermission.

Festler scored his second goal of the game in the second period in between a pair of St. Michael's goals as the two teams were knotted at 3-3 after two periods.

Fulton scored the game-winner at 5:36 of the third peroid before Festler added an insurance goal.

Wanvig stopped 28 shots for the Pipers in the contest. His counterpart Erik Smith made 31 saves in a losing effort.

The Pipers will host UW-Stout on Friday. Game time at Drake Arena is set for 7:15 p.m.
