Kurr lifts men's hockey past Johnson & Wales

First-year Kyle Kurr scored at the 3:18 mark of overtime as the Pipers defeated Johnson & Wales 6-5 Saturday night at the St. Michael's Tournament in Burlington, Vt.

Kurr scored his second goal of the season at the 3:18 mark of the overtime session to give the Pipers (3-8) the win.

Johnson & Wales (6-5) came back from a two-goal deficit to force the overtime period. Mike O'Malley and Ryan Jacobs tied the game at 5-5 before Kurr's heroics.

After falling behind 2-0, Hamline reeled off four of the game's next five goals. Jack Madryga and Steve Festler each scored goal in the first period to knot the game at 2-2 heading into intermission.

Sophomore forward Joe Long netted a pair of power-play goals in the second period as the Pipers claimed a 4-3 lead.

Hamline held a 38-36 advantage in shots on goal in the contest. Matt Wanvig stopped 31 shots for the Pipers while Wildcat goaltender Brian Noiles made 32 saves in a losing effort.

The Pipers will play host St. Michael's in the championship game of the tournament. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. EST on Sunday afternoon.
